Customs in the Salzburger Lungau
Salzburger Lungau is a very special region, an authentic natural landscape where people have preserved their culture and traditions. Guests have the opportunity to get to know the Alps from their most traditional side here.
The Lungauer Samson
Samson is probably the best-known figure from the Salzburger Lungau. Samson symbolises an Old Testament figure with superhuman powers, which lie in his long hair.
Many myths, legends and conjectures surround the giant figure from Salzburg’s Lungau region. The Samson Carrying was entered in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Austria back in 2010.
Prangstangen
The Prangstangen processions are probably one of the most beautiful and colourful experiences in the Lungau customs year. The custom of carrying the Prangstangen is celebrated in two Lungau communities – in Zederhaus (on 24 June on St. John’s Day) and in Muhr (on 29 June on Peter & Paul’s Day).
The flowers are painstakingly hand-picked from alpine meadows and tied into long garlands. Up to 60,000 different summer flowers are wrapped around the 6 to 8 metre high, impressive canopies weighing up to 85 kg.
Preberschießen
Just a few minutes away from Tamsweg, the beautiful 2,740 metre-high Preber rises up with its picturesque Prebersee lake. This legendary moorland lake harbours many secrets, including the composition of its water surface, which makes ‘Preber shooting’ possible. In this unique target shooting technique, the target is not aimed directly at the target, but at its reflection in the water. Due to the density of the seawater, the ball bounces off and hits the target set up on dry land.
